VE Day – 80th Anniversary

On Thursday 8th May at 9.30pm members of the Bere Ferrers Parish Council will light a beacon situated in the grounds of Bere Alston Bowling Club, as part of a National Chain of hundreds of beacons and fires, lit at that time to commemorate the 8oth Anniversary of the ending of the Second World War. After the lighting the Revd. Nick Law will lead with prayers and this will be followed by the playing of the Last Post and Reveille by Peter Hurdwell of the Tavistock Stannary Brass Band.
The site is atop the Permian Ridge and we expect to see the fires of other communities across the UK as they light thousands of beacons to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The lighting of the beacons will occur at 9:30 pm. This event is part of a larger series of commemorations to remember and reflect on the end of World War II in Europe. The beacons symbolize the “light of peace” that emerged from the darkness of war.
The Parish Council and the Bowling Club welcome visitors to the event and promise that the bar will be open!
